In 1981, gem prospector Heitor Dimas Barbosa began tunneling into a hill near São José da Batalha in Paraíba, Brazil, convinced the region concealed an undiscovered gemstone. Working for years in the rugged, arid landscape with limited resources and little evidence of success, Barbosa persisted in his search. In 1987, his determination was rewarded with the discovery of the first Brazilian Paraiba tourmalines, extraordinary gems unlike any previously seen. Production from the original deposit proved remarkably limited, with the majority of stones mined between 1989 and 1992. Their breathtaking appearance is owed to a rare chemical composition containing traces of copper and manganese, which gives Paraiba tourmalines their vivid coloration and signature neon glow that seems to illuminate the stone from within.
