Clementine Hunter draws upon her own experiences working in Louisiana's cotton fields in this compelling portrayal of Black Southern life. Through her art, she documents the daily labor and lived experiences of her Cane River community. Her distinctive memory paintings preserve a significant part of Southern history through the eyes of an artist who experienced it firsthand.
Three women move through a cotton field, each carrying an enormous white sack filled with the day's harvest. Dressed in brightly colored clothing and broad-brimmed hats, the figures stand against a softly colored landscape beneath a pale blue sky. Hunter uses simplified forms, vivid colors and thick, expressive brushstrokes to bring the scene to life.
A self-taught artist from Louisiana's Cane River region, Hunter spent much of her early life working as a field laborer before becoming a domestic worker at Melrose Plantation. She began painting in her fifties, using everyday materials to record the work, worship and celebrations of her community. Her distinctive paintings have earned her national recognition as one of the most important American folk artists of the 20th century. Works such as Cotton Picking Scene are especially meaningful for their direct connection to Hunter's own life, preserving the experiences of Black Southern workers through the eyes of an artist who shared them.
