Worth of this monumental gift, the Fitzwilliam was born in humble circumstances. . .
Worth of this monumental gift, the Fitzwilliam was born in humble circumstances in North America, where he lived with his parents until his childhood home burned. His life took a dramatic turn as he ascended to nobility as the eldest son of William, Viscount Milton. He relocated to England following the fire and received a prestigious education at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, thus beginning a distinguished career in which he served as an aide-de-camp to the Viceroy of India and an MP for Wakefield in the South African War. Upon succeeding his grandfather in 1902, William was presented with this silver cooler by the Corporation of Dublin to mark his accession. William distinguished himself as Lord Mayor of Sheffield from 1909-10 and Alderman thereof, and received the honor of being inducted as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. In the First World War, he served as Lieutenant Colonel.
This remarkable champagne cooler was once part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
