Oil on canvas
An elegant young woman gives the viewer a sensual look in this oil on canvas by French artist Victor Guerrier. Softly lit and lushly detailed, the Belle Époque-inspired painting embodies a world of emotion, exemplary of Guerrier’s finest output. An incredible white fur set adorns the fashionable woman as her arms form sinuous lines following the accentuated curves of her body. Looking through lowered eyelids with gently parted lips, the woman engages the viewer, inviting them into the scene. Guerrier’s paintings display the influence of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionist masters, particularly Édouard Manet and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose lively compositions of Parisian society and nightlife captivated the artist.
Victor Guerrier was raised and trained artistically in Lyon but became known for his depictions of Parisian life, energized by his rich color palette and dramatic impasto. His high-society, Belle Époque subjects celebrate the pomp and merriment of life in turn-of-the-century Paris, qualities artfully conveyed in this elegant portrait.
