This exquisite ruby glass jug by Elkington & Co. is mounted with gilt silver in a finely detailed grapevine motif, signaling its intended use as a wine decanter. The vibrant red glass is precisely cut to exceptional caliber, while the silver mounts are intricately rendered, with broad leaves, twisting vines and clusters of grapes applied to both the body and lid. The rich cranberry coloration is achieved through the addition of gold to the molten glass, a costly process that made ruby glass items such as this rare and produced in far smaller quantities than ordinary clear glass vessels.
Known as one of the finest 19th-century producers of silver and electroplate wares, Elkington & Co. created pieces of individual and exceptional design. Founded during the 1830s, the firm was the supplier of flatware to the luxury dining sections of the Titanic and enjoyed years of Royal commissions from Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, as well as the monarchs of Spain and Italy.
