Émile Gallé
Circa 1900
Exceptional in both scale and artistry, this sand-etched cameo glass vase is a masterwork by the celebrated Art Nouveau pioneer Émile Gallé, among the most revered figures in French glassmaking. Renowned for his technical innovation and poetic interpretation of nature, Gallé transformed decorative glass into an expressive art form. Measuring nearly two feet in height, this impressive vase represents a rare example of monumental scale within Gallé’s oeuvre while maintaining the elegant proportions and refined balance for which his work is prized.
The vase is richly decorated with finely rendered foliage that ascends gracefully along its surface. The design was achieved by overlaying multiple layers of colored glass and selectively removing portions through acid-etching and carving to reveal the intricate botanical motif beneath.
Émile Gallé was a leading figure of the Art Nouveau movement and one of the founding members of the École de Nancy, a collective dedicated to uniting fine and decorative arts through nature-inspired design. He inherited his family’s glass and ceramics enterprise in Nancy and expanded it into one of the most influential artistic manufactories in Europe. His work garnered international acclaim at major world exhibitions, cementing his reputation as one of the foremost innovators in decorative glass.
