The hilt is embellished with round quillons terminating in small disks and a shell guard engraved with feather patterns. The leather-covered wooden scabbard is fitted with gilded mounts, including a chape adorned with a Native American trophy of arms and a cap surmounted by a fierce lynx’s head. To the French imagination, Native Americans embodied courage, freedom and an uncorrupted harmony with nature.
