As much a work of art as a weapon, this exceptional French sword captures the imagination of the Romantic era. Its gilded grip is cast in the round as a Native American warrior holding a dagger and flintlock musket, an imaginative design that reflects France’s fascination with the New World. The straight, double-edged blade is finely constructed with a central riser and double groove, its strength balanced by a refined profile. The hilt is embellished with round quillons terminating in small disks and a shell guard engraved with feather patterns. The leather-covered wooden scabbard is fitted with gilded mounts, including a chape adorned with a Native American trophy of arms and a cap surmounted by a fierce lynx’s head. To the French imagination, Native Americans embodied courage, freedom and an uncorrupted harmony with nature.
