Le Fauteuil de rotin (The Rattan Armchair)

Signed “CASSIGNEUL” (lower center)
Signed, dated and titled “Cassigneul / 2010 / Le fauteuil de Rotin” (on the reverse)
Oil on canvas

Renowned French artist Jean-Pierre Cassigneul brings together the most celebrated elements of his distinctive oeuvre in Le Fauteuil de rotin. This striking portrait combines an elegant woman, sophisticated fashion and a tranquil coastal setting. Its timeless glamour and bold, modern composition make it an exceptional example of the artist’s unmistakable style.

Shown in profile, the sitter wears a beautiful white blouse, pearl drop earrings and a dramatic black hat crowned by a crimson rose. The curved back of her rattan chair envelops her figure in warm ochre tones, while sailboats drift across the blue-green water beyond. Cassigneul’s sinuous outlines, expressive brushwork and luminous palette heighten the sitter’s mysterious beauty and quiet sense of reverie.

Born in Paris in 1935, Cassigneul grew up amid the designers, models and luxurious fabrics of the Jean Dessès fashion house. He held his first solo exhibition at just 17 and later trained at the Académie Charpentier and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Drawing upon the French Post-Impressionist tradition, he developed a highly personal figurative language centered on fashionable women, picturesque gardens and elegant seaside retreats.
