Elegantly dressed figures wander along the water's edge beneath towering trees, giving the composition both an inviting sense of leisure and a timeless charm.
Pissarro builds the landscape through richly textured passages of paint. Lavender, orange and violet leaves form a dramatic canopy overhead, while luminous blues, greens and pinks ripple across the lake below. Broad strokes and generous impasto give the foliage an almost sculptural presence, while the reflections across the water dissolve into jewel-like touches of color. The grandson of Impressionist master Camille Pissarro and the son of painter Paulémile Pissarro, H. Claude Pissarro was immersed in art from childhood. He held his first exhibition at age fourteen and later studied at the École Normale Supérieure before training in art restoration at the Louvre. In 1959, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Over his long career, Pissarro has explored numerous artistic approaches while remaining especially celebrated for luminous landscapes distinguished by expressive color and vigorous handling of paint.
