Mined exclusively from Yogo Gulch, these sapphires are renowned for their exceptional natural hue. George Kunz, Tiffany & Co. gemologist in the 1880s, described them as “the finest precious gemstones ever found in America.” Unlike most sapphires, Yogo stones retain their color naturally, without heat treatment, preserving their purity and brilliance.
Created under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), a pioneering force in American decorative arts, this necklace exemplifies his innovative approach to color, light, and organic forms. As founder of Tiffany Studios and son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, he emerged as a leading Art Nouveau artist, with jewelry distinguished by a painterly arrangement of gemstones. The design reflects the brilliance of Meta K. Overbeck, Head Designer of Tiffany’s Art Jewelry Department, who brought Tiffany’s vision to life through creations celebrating nature and color. This remarkable necklace is accompanied by its IAJA report, attesting to its illustrious history.
