Louis XVI Style Gilt Marble Vases
19th Century

A celebration of neoclassical taste, this exquisite pair of garniture vases embodies the grandeur and refinement of Louis XVI's French court, whose elegant aesthetic inspired decorative arts well into the 19th century. Each is sculpted from luminous white marble, creating a striking contrast with the richly gilded bronze mounts that cascade down the sides. Delicate floral garlands and acanthus leaves are gathered with finely sculpted bows, exemplifying the symmetry and balance characteristic of the Louis XVI style. Twin architectural handles rise above the shoulders, crowned with sculpted spheres that create a pleasing contrast between organic ornament and architectural form. Each vase rests on a square marble plinth accented by gilt bronze Louis XVI-style toupie feet and finely chased acanthus leaf, rose and ribbon ormolu decoration.

The lavish floral ornamentation lends the composition a sense of movement and abundance characteristic of the finest work of 18th-century Parisian bronziers. Combined with the vases' architectural elements, these details reflect the enduring influence of French neoclassicism. Standing approximately 12 inches high, the pair rewards close examination with an extraordinary wealth of detail, showcasing the exceptional precision of its decorative casting.
