Encircling the garnets, 29 rose-cut diamonds totaling 1.40 carats add a shimmering frame to the intricate gold motif, enhancing the pendant’s elegance and depth. Mounted in 18K gold, the cross bears the distinguished signature of Mellerio dits Meller, Paris and Madrid, “17 CX.” “CX” translates to 110 in Roman numerals – a detail likely commemorating the 110th anniversary of Mellerio’s Madrid branch, founded in 1850. Still in its original box, this pendant is an extraordinary treasure.

As a reliquary pendant, a small, lidded compartment is discreetly fitted at the reverse of the cross. This compartment was designed to hold a small religious relic, such as a piece of cloth, a bone fragment or another sacred item – a coveted feature in Catholic Europe. Resembling the finest of papal pendants, it is highly likely that this was made for a high-ranking ecclesiastical client or a prestigious religious individual. Renowned as one of the oldest jewelry maisons in the world, Mellerio dits Meller has long been favored by European royalty and aristocracy for its exceptional artistry and unparalleled designs.
