Designed circa 1920, the lamp reflects the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Its naturalistic landscape and organic imagery recall the traditions of Art Nouveau, while its saturated palette and bold form anticipate the decorative impact of Art Deco. Both the shade and base are worked in cameo glass, allowing the imagery to continue across the entire lamp.
Active from 1895 to 1933, Muller Frères became renowned for its art glass and lighting. The layered glass and acid-etched decoration seen here demonstrate the techniques for which the firm is best known, using contrasting layers of color to give the landscape remarkable depth and luminosity.
