Circa 1865

This extraordinary silver-gilt library lamp was custom-made for Emperor Napoleon III by the renowned jeweler Alexis Falize, one of the most distinguished artisans of France’s Second Empire. Known for creating masterpieces for Europe’s royal and imperial families, Falize's designs represent the pinnacle of imperial taste and craftsmanship. The lamp case bears the Emperor’s 'N' insignia and crown, reflecting its royal provenance and historical significance.

The lamp masterfully blends ancient motifs with modern artistry. Resting on intricate claw feet, its barrel is supported by regal sphinxes and adorned with pearls, while Eastern-inspired arms hold delicate colored glass screens. Turquoise settings and a central medallion further elevate the luxurious design. It is housed in its original Morocco leather case, embossed with the imperial 'N' and crown, a testament to its royal history. So renowned in its time, a similar lamp was prominently featured in both German and American art journals in 1874-75.

Alexis Falize was at the forefront of the aesthetic revolution during France's Second Empire. After his apprenticeship with the legendary Mellerio, Falize opened his own workshop in 1838, where his innovative designs quickly gained recognition. His mastery of cloisonné enamels and his embrace of Japanese-inspired motifs set him apart from his contemporaries. By the late 1860s, Falize’s creations were coveted by European royalty, and he was the only jeweler whose works were purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum at the 1867 World’s Fair. Today, his works are held in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Walters Art Museum. Exhibited at The Fan Museum in Greenwich from 2011-2012, this lamp exemplifies the brilliance of Alexis Falize’s craft and remains a testament to the grandeur of the Second Empire.
