Circa 1809

This exquisite pair of Sheffield plate candlesticks showcases the renowned craftsmanship of Matthew Boulton, one of the most distinguished makers of Neoclassical silver and Old Sheffield Plate. Each candlestick features a baluster-shaped standard adorned with stiff leaf chasing at the base, accented by a foliate-chased knop. The design is elevated by the high-domed foot, bordered with intricate foliate chasing. Each foot bears Boulton’s iconic double sun mark.

Visually, these candlesticks epitomize the elegance and grandeur of the Neoclassical style, with their sophisticated leaf and foliate motifs that echo the designs of the celebrated British architect Robert Adam. The symmetrical form and decorative elements, combined with the fine chasing work, create a harmonious balance of form and function which is a remarkable example of early 19th-century craftsmanship.

Matthew Boulton, a pioneering figure in both the silver trade and the industrial revolution, set unparalleled standards in the world of decorative arts. Beyond his mastery of silver, Boulton was instrumental in the development of the steam engine and revolutionized manufacturing processes. He was also responsible for the establishment of assay offices in Birmingham and Sheffield, cementing his legacy as both an innovator and an advocate for quality in silver craftsmanship. His influence, lasting beyond his death in 1809, continued through his son and James Watt Jr., who carried on the Boulton legacy. Additionally, this pair of candlesticks was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
