While playing at the famous Winged Foot Golf Club in 1937, Raymond Yard met 17-year-old golf caddy, Robert Gibson. The two struck up a friendship, and Robert soon came to work for Yard. Amazingly, Gibson not only became Yard's protégé, but he also was named president of the firm 21 years later and his son, Bob Gibson, still runs the business today. Thus, embedded in this enchanting rabbit golf caddy brooch is a touching story about friendship and the artistic legacy of one of America's greatest jewelers.
The brooch is adorned with 104 round cut blue sapphires totaling 1.20 carats, making up the rabbit’s blue sports coat and newsboy cap. The green tie is elevated by 161 round diamonds with a total weight of 1.07 carats, forming his pants and shoes, further accentuated by three marquise cut white diamonds weighing 0.14 carat. A single round ruby glitters as his eye and an accent of red enamel punctuates his cap, tying in his red enamel golf bag. The stylish sportsman stands with his hands in his pockets as if waiting to assist his golfer. Set in platinum.
Raymond Yard's rabbit brooch designs quickly became synonymous with his brand—frequently appearing personified as dapper gentlemen, waiters, and even palace guards. In the age of American enterprise, the revered New York jeweler was creating one-of-a-kind jewels like this one for famous clients, including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Woolworths, and DuPonts. Credited with elevating the Art Deco aesthetic to new heights, Yard's innovative designs and exceptional craftsmanship are truly timeless, continuing to inspire and delight today.
