Among the most progressive figures in early 20th-century Dutch art, Jan Sluijters introduced the bold color and expressive brushwork of the European avant-garde to the Netherlands. Painted circa 1950, Reclining Nude exemplifies the artist's mature style, balancing vibrant color with an intimate domestic scene. Works of this caliber by Sluijters remain highly sought after, with examples held in major Dutch museum collections including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.
Rendered with loose, confident brushstrokes and a radiant Post-Impressionist palette, the composition is imbued with warmth and tranquility. Dappled sunlight pours into the bedroom, illuminating the reclining figure as she rests amongst crisp white linens. A vivid bouquet of flowers brightens the windowsill, its brilliant hues echoing throughout the composition and lending the interior a remarkable sense of immediacy.
Alongside Leo Gestel and Piet Mondrian, Sluijters ranks among the pioneers of Dutch Modernism. Following formative visits to Paris in the early 20th century, he embraced the innovations of Neo-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism, adapting these international movements into a distinctly personal style. His fearless experimentation with brilliant color and expressive form transformed Dutch painting and established him as one of the country's most influential modern artists. Today, his works reside in important public collections, while his finest paintings remain prized by collectors for their vibrant energy and technical virtuosity.
This painting is included in the RKD's digital catalogue raisonné of Jan Sluijters' painted oeuvre.
