This extraordinary brooch by René Lalique captures the daring imagination that made him the defining genius of Art Nouveau jewelry. Crafted circa 1900, this treasure transforms the female form into a winged, butterfly-like figure—a poetic fusion of figure, nature and fantasy that became one of Lalique’s most iconic artistic themes.

Lalique revolutionized jewelry at the turn of the century, rejecting conventional displays of gemstones in favor of jewels conceived as true works of art. Rather than allowing diamonds alone to dictate a design, he elevated line, symbolism, craftsmanship and materials into a new visual language. This brooch perfectly embodies that vision, with the graceful 18K gold figure framed by luminous wings of plique-à-jour enamel accented with rose cut and old mine diamonds.

Often described as “backless cloisonné,” plique-à-jour is widely considered the most technically demanding and fragile of all enameling techniques. Here, the translucent enamel is suspended within the delicate gold framework of the wings, creating the effect of luminous stained glass. Surviving examples of this quality are exceptionally rare, particularly in such remarkable condition.

More than an adornment, this brooch is a miniature masterpiece by one of history’s most important jewelry designers.
