This rare Chinese porcelain bowl decorated with rust-red and gold floral motif was part of the famed Nanking Cargo. In 1985 this bowl was recovered from the Dutch trading ship the "Geldermalsen" which sank in 1752 on its way back from the Orient. The sunken treasures found during the salvaging of the ship have become known as the Nanking Cargo. In 1986, Christie's Amsterdam sold the recovered items in a frenzied four-day auction, with this mug included as lot 1216.
