Louis Comfort Tiffany is internationally recognized as a master of the American decorative arts. Considered the driving force behind the Art Nouveau movement in America, Tiffany is known best for his striking lamps and stained-glass windows. His discovery in 1881 of what he called “Favrile” glass (derived from an old English word meaning “hand-crafted”) catapulted his reputation worldwide. By the 1890s, he was the leading art glass producer in the United States, serving wealthy New Yorkers and working on commissions for Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. Now, the rarity and elegance of Tiffany’s lamps make them some of the most desired antiques of all time, confirming his legacy as an icon of American design.
The shade is marked "L.C.T. Favrile" and the base "Tiffany Studios/New York/677"
