This stunning hanging lamp was created by the iconic Tiffany Studios and belonged to the personal collection of the artistic visionary Louis Comfort Tiffany. In addition to his many artistic talents, Tiffany was also a gifted interior decorator who selected only the most remarkable objects for his many residences. This ethereal hanging lantern was prominently displayed in his grand Miami home, known as Comfort Lodge.
A masterpiece of delicate florals and luminous color, this blown-glass lantern embodies the height of Tiffany's artistic achievements. Soft white nasturtium flowers dance across a flurry of bright green lily pads, capturing the organic beauty of nature for which Tiffany was most celebrated. The center of each flower contains a distinctive "millefiore" detail, a complex technique that translates to "thousand flowers" for the intricate floral shape it creates. Tiffany masterfully fused this method with his signature iridescence to create this magnificent design. Not only did this lantern hang in Louis Comfort Tiffany's Miami home, but a very similar design also adorned the main entrance to his New York mansion, Laurelton Hall, underscoring Tiffany's personal affection for this unique design.
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Comfort Lodge was built on Miami’s “Millionaire Row” in the 1920s as his winter estate. The home’s distinctive octagonal shape, disappearing walls and windows, and cypress tree supports attracted much attention at the time, and local newspapers reported that the house cost Tiffany an astonishing $40,000—at a time when the average home cost $4,000.
Tiffany frequented Comfort Lodge until his death in 1933, and the handlers of his estate sold the home and all of its contents to a businessman named David Scobie in 1935. Mr. Scobie gifted some of Tiffany’s belongings left in the house—including this lantern—to his business associate and his family, the Martins, who kept these items in their family collection in Florida for decades. This lamp stands as both a testament to Tiffany Studios’ magnificent craftsmanship and to the unparalleled vision of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
