Bengt Lindstrom was a contemporary Swedish painter, sculptor and printmaker best known for his bold abstract paintings, often based on Scandinavian and Sámi mythology. This painting is exemplary of his style, featuring a highly abstracted face rendered in vibrant colors. An inscription on the reverse of the canvas reads “Thor’s Spirit” in Swedish, suggesting the painting aligns with Lindstrom’s typical subject matter. Lindstrom’s paintings employed a sculptural intaglio process, building thick layers of paint on his canvases, which, combined with his dramatic color palette, result in strikingly expressive images.
Lindstrom’s vivid canvases have earned him a place as one of Sweden’s most well-known contemporary artists. He began painting while going to school in the Swedish village of Härnösand before attending the Isaac Grünewald Art School in Stockholm and the Copenhagen Fine Arts School in Denmark. His interest in mythology was instilled at a young age by his father, who shared similar fascinations. Lindstrom was also inspired by the European avant-garde group COBRA, including the Dutch painter Karel Appel. While influential during his career, the market for his art increased near the end of his life, with paintings selling at auction for as much as $58,000.
