The Louisiana State Museum is the new owner of an antique that was once thought to be destined for the White House.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne's (DAHR'-dehn's) office says an antiques business in New Orleans is donating an armoire that is believed to have been built by supporters of presidential candidate Henry Clay. Clay supporters are said to have had it built as part of a set of furniture for the presidential bedroom.

Clay lost the 1844 election, however, and the furniture wound up at Rosedown Plantation in St. Francisville. It was eventually obtained by M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans, which made the donation.

The American Gothic Revival-style armoire will be newly unveiled Thursday at the Cabildo in New Orleans' Jackson Square.
