Dawn and a West Wind in the China Seas

Signed "Montague Dawson" (lower left)
Entitled "Dawn and a West Wind in the China Seas / Star of Persia" (en verso)
Oil on canvas

Perhaps no artist captured the majesty and romance of the great Age of Sail as masterfully as Montague Dawson, and Dawn and a West Wind in the China Seas is among his most atmospheric maritime compositions. Depicting the historic Star of Persia pressing through rolling seas beneath a radiant sunrise, the painting combines Dawson's meticulous understanding of historic vessels with his extraordinary ability to evoke the poetry of the open ocean. The luminous sky bathes the great sailing ship in golden light, transforming a hardworking merchant vessel into an enduring symbol of adventure, endurance and maritime tradition.

Rendered with Dawson's characteristically confident brushwork, the Star of Persia surges across cresting waves under a full press of sail. The dramatic interplay between the cool blue-green sea and the warm morning light creates a remarkable sense of movement and atmosphere, making this one of Dawson's most visually captivating seascapes.

Built in 1868 by Russell & Co. of Port Glasgow, the Star of Persia was one of the celebrated "Star" ships owned by J.P. Corry & Co.'s Calcutta Star Line. Registered in Belfast, she sailed the important trade routes between Britain and India, transporting cargo during the height of Britain's maritime commerce. Dawson was particularly captivated by these majestic square-rigged sailing ships, once remarking, "There is terrific romance in a sail."

Widely regarded as the foremost marine painter of the twentieth century, Montague Dawson devoted his career to preserving the romance of historic sailing ships with unmatched technical accuracy and artistic brilliance. Following service in the Royal Navy during the First World War, he established an international reputation through exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Marine Artists, while his illustrations appeared in The Sphere. By the 1930s he was considered the greatest living marine painter, and his patrons included Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as the British Royal Family.
