Directoire furniture is so named because it was crafted during the period of the French Directory, just prior to Napoléon’s reign. Pieces in this style take much of their inspiration from ancient Roman artifacts that had been recovered from the Pompeiian excavations in the late 18th century. Elegant lines, sparse detail and ornamentation are all characteristics of this aesthetic, which influenced designers for many years after.
