Crafted by the renowned 19th-century French jeweler Alexis Falize, these exquisite earrings are a rare testament to his mastery of cloisonné enamel. With an ingenious reversible design and vibrant hues, each earring features a fantastical Renaissance-style griffin on one side and a sparkling thistle on the other. The exquisite wire work is rendered in 18K yellow gold, and the opulent design is accented with ornamental seed pearls, rose cut diamonds and old cut rubies. Still in pristine condition and complete with their original box, these unique earrings perfectly embody the artistry and innovation of Falize, whose influential work helped define French decorative arts during the era.

Alexis Falize was at the forefront of the aesthetic revolution during France's Second Empire. After his apprenticeship with the legendary Mellerio, Falize opened his own workshop in 1838, where his innovative designs quickly gained recognition. His mastery of cloisonné enamels and his embrace of Japanese-inspired motifs set him apart from his contemporaries. By the late 1860s, Falize’s creations were coveted by European royalty, and he was the only jeweler whose works were purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum at the 1867 World’s Fair. Today, his works are held in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Walters Art Museum.
