On October 21, 1805, Nelson led the British fleet against the combined French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar. During the fighting, a French marksman aboard the Redoutable fatally wounded him with a lead musket ball. The projectile that killed Nelson was subsequently preserved by the ship’s surgeon, William Beatty, and presented to Queen Victoria after Beatty’s death. It remains in the Royal Collection today, providing an institutional parallel for the type of ammunition represented by this relic.
