The elegant surahi rises from a broad trumpet foot to a rounded, bulbous body before narrowing into a slender, tapering neck and slightly flared rim. Throughout, floral diamond-set motifs are arranged against brilliant red, white and green enamel grounds, while the neck and domed lid are enriched with additional floral, geometric and strapwork patterns. Green enameled floral rosettes are concealed beneath the base and lid, revealing the extraordinary attention given to every surface of the vessel.
The flask draws upon the sophisticated traditions of Indian jeweled metalwork, particularly the Mughal-era combination of gemstone setting and enameling. Kundan gemstone setting and meenakari enameling became hallmarks of Indian luxury arts, with goldsmiths creating richly ornamented surfaces in which precious stones and brilliant enamel work in concert. The surahi form itself is closely associated with historic Indian jeweled vessels, including Mughal examples that combine rounded bodies, slender necks and elaborate gem-set and enameled decoration.
