Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory

Circa 1809
Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power found an enduring artistic expression in the porcelain of Sèvres. Crafted circa 1809, this Sèvres biscuit porcelain bust presents Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul, following a portrait model introduced in 1802. Its distinguished subject and celebrated maker unite two defining forces of the Napoleonic age: the ruler who reshaped Europe and the manufactory that helped express the prestige of his regime.
The portrait follows a model by Louis-Simon Boizot, one of the leading sculptors associated with Sèvres. Napoleon appears with short, carefully articulated hair, an intent gaze and a high-collared general’s uniform. Oak leaves and acorns trace the double-breasted coat, their delicate relief contrasting with the smooth planes of his face. Left deliberately free of glaze, the white biscuit porcelain lends the portrait the restrained appearance of carved marble. A circular porcelain socle supports the bust above a black presentation base accented with gilt ornament and a plaque bearing Napoleon’s name.
During the Consulate and First Empire, Napoleon’s patronage strengthened Sèvres’ role as a showcase for French artistry. The manufactory produced portrait busts, imposing vases and richly painted plates that celebrated his rule, furnished imperial residences and served as diplomatic gifts. Napoleon took a personal interest in these commissions, even selecting subjects for his celebrated table service. Already renowned under the French monarchy, Sèvres brought its artistic prestige and technical mastery to the service of the imperial court. This lifetime portrait belongs to that important intersection of porcelain, politics and power.
