Jules Leleu (1883–1961) was a French furniture designer celebrated for combining modern design with classical elegance. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France, he studied decorative painting before joining his brother Marcel in the family’s painting business and expanding into furniture design. He established Maison Leleu in 1910 and opened a Paris gallery in 1924. The following year, he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, securing his reputation as a leading figure in French Art Deco.
His prestigious commissions included interiors for ocean liners such as the SS Île de France and SS Normandie, French embassies and the French Delegates’ Lounge at the League of Nations in Geneva. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Like fellow French Art Deco designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Leleu combined refined classical forms with sumptuous materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Exotic woods, intricate marquetry, ivory inlays and lacquer finishes became hallmarks of his work. His three children played important roles in the business and continued it after his death in 1961. The house closed in 1973 and was later revived by his great-granddaughter Alexia Leleu.
