Bathed in the golden light of summer, this captivating oil by Edward Alfred Cucuel captures a serene moment of leisure beside a tranquil lake. Two fashionable women linger in a rowboat, surrounded by shimmering water, distant hills and softly dappled foliage. Cucuel’s luminous brushwork and delicate palette create an atmosphere of elegance, reflecting the beauty and tranquility of the natural world.
Celebrated for his radiant depictions of women at leisure, Cucuel mastered the interplay of light, color and atmosphere that defined his Impressionist style. This painting exemplifies the qualities that established him as one of the finest American Impressionists.
Born in San Francisco, Cucuel began his formal art training at age fourteen at the city’s School of Design. In 1892, he moved to Paris, where he studied under renowned Academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts. Over the following decades, he worked throughout France, Italy and Germany, gaining recognition for his distinctive approach to Impressionism.
In 1907, Cucuel established a studio in Munich and joined the Scholle group of artists led by Leo Putz, an important German Impressionist and pioneer of Expressionism. During this period, he developed the luminous plein air style that would define his career. He exhibited regularly in Paris, became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and received a silver medal at the 1915 San Francisco International Exposition.
Cucuel later purchased a home in Holzhausen, Germany, overlooking a Bavarian lake where he spent summers painting his beloved scenes of female figures in gardens and along green shorelines. Today, his works are held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Birkenhead, England and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
