Kensington Pattern Rose Bowl
T.G. Hawkes & Company
Circa 1900

This exceptional two-part rose bowl by T.G. Hawkes & Company showcases the extraordinary artistry that defined the American Brilliant Period. Executed in the firm's celebrated Kensington pattern, introduced around 1900, the vessel dazzles with deeply cut geometric ornament that transforms light into a brilliant display. Examples preserved in pristine condition are exceptionally rare, as many rose bowls developed "sick glass" from prolonged exposure to water over the decades. This beautifully preserved example retains its remarkable clarity and brilliance.

The Kensington pattern is among Hawkes's most elaborate and technically demanding designs. Large 24-point hobstars radiate across the bowl and pedestal, complemented by elongated cane-cut triangular panels and intricate subsidiary hobstars that create a richly textured surface. The bowl separates from its pedestal while fitting securely together for easy use and display. Originally designed to hold floating rose blossoms, dried petals, potpourri or short-stemmed flowers, it remains as functional as it is beautiful.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost names in American cut glass, T.G. Hawkes & Company achieved international acclaim during the American Brilliant Period, from approximately 1880 to 1910. Renowned for exceptional craftsmanship and innovative cutting techniques, the firm's creations graced the homes of many of America's most prominent families, including the Rockefellers, Astors, Whitneys, Vanderbilts and Fricks. Today, Hawkes remains synonymous with the finest achievements in American cut glass, with patterns such as Kensington representing the height of the firm's artistry.
