The Prince of Wales Silver Presentation Cup
Elkington & Co.
Hallmarked London, 1900

This monumental silver presentation cup is a rare surviving object that unites royal patronage, diplomatic history and masterful English silversmithing. Made by Elkington & Co. and presented by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales—the future King Edward VII—it commemorates Monsieur Lozes’ assistance to the British section of the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. With its engraved inscription, royal arms and accompanying original framed letter from the Prince, the cup is an exceptional treasure of European history.

Founded in Birmingham in the 19th century, Elkington & Co. was among the most important English silver firms of its era, celebrated for technical innovation and luxurious production. The firm earned an international reputation for its refined workmanship and ambitious exhibition pieces, supplying silver for prominent patrons and major world fairs.

Impressive in both scale and presence, the cup stands on a circular foot and rises in a commanding classical form, accented by bold scrolling handles. The Prince of Wales’s coat of arms and engraved presentation inscription are beautifully engraved. The generous proportions and substantial weight give the cup the authority expected of an official royal gift, among the most luxurious items ever created.

The inscription on the cup reads as follows:
The Prince of Wales wishes and thanks Monsieur Lozes for the courteous assistance which he has been good enough to give to the officials of the British Section of the International Exhibition of 1900 in the performance of their duties. H.R.H. takes this opportunity of asking Monsieur Lozes to accept a small remembrance of the international duties which have brought him into relation with the staff of the Royal Commission with such excellent results.
