Crafted by William R. Smily, a distinguished member of the prestigious Smily family of silversmiths, this Victorian silver teapot exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of 19th-century English silver. The Smily family, known for their exquisite silverwork, operated in London from around 1820 until the late 19th century, creating works renowned for their elegance and quality.

The teapot features a striking hexagonal, tapering form with intricate scroll-chased embellishments along the bottom rim. Each panel is adorned with finely engraved C-scroll medallions, while the body is decorated with four vertical, oval, concave C-scroll-chased medallions. The teapot is further embellished with C-scroll borders, chains and a swan's-neck spout. The elaborate C-scroll handle and high-domed lid with a double-foliate pointed knop finial add to its refined appearance. These ornate elements exemplify the elaborate and highly decorative style that was popular in the Victorian era. The base is stamped with the hallmark and "J Mayer Silversmith, Liverpool," indicating its retail origin. Additionally, this teapot was a part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
