Winston Churchill sent this signed letter and two Christmas cards, featuring his own paintings, to his close friend Odette Pol-Roger. Dated January 30, 1951, the set reveals the leader's artistic passion and private friendships. The exchange with the matriarch of his favorite Champagne house captures a warmth rarely associated with his towering public image.
Writing from his London home at 28 Hyde Park Gate, Churchill thanks Odette for joining him at the Embassy on short notice and fulfills his promise to send cards bearing his paintings, published in the United States. He modestly remarks, “I do not know if they will amuse you, but you were good enough to express interest in them.” The cards depict Le Béguinage, Bruges, with its sunlit buildings and figures beneath tall trees, and Sirmione, a tranquil scene along Italy’s Lake Garda. His handwritten salutation, “My dear Odette,” and familiar closing, “Yours ever,” convey their easy affection.
Churchill took up painting in 1915 at the age of 40, discovering a pursuit that would sustain him through decades of public responsibility. His love of color and landscape found expression in hundreds of canvases, while American Christmas cards introduced his work to a wider audience. Here, the cards and accompanying letter connect Churchill’s artistic life with the personal relationships he treasured.
