This signed letter from Winston Churchill recounting his winning wager on his racehorse Pol Roger offers a direct connection to one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century. Dated June 26, 1953, and written on 10 Downing Street stationery during his second premiership, the letter to his close friend Odette Pol-Roger reveals the private character behind the towering public figure. Accompanied by a handwritten betting account and the original banknotes and coins associated with their exchange, it preserves a remarkably personal chapter in Churchill’s life.
Uniting two of Churchill’s great loves, Champagne and horse racing, Pol Roger was named after his favorite Champagne house in tribute to his friendship with Odette. The horse won the Black Prince Stakes at Kempton Park on June 2, 1953, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Churchill had placed £2 on Odette’s behalf at odds of 11–4, linking their shared celebration to a defining occasion in British history.
Addressing her as “My dear Odette,” Churchill recounts the winning bet and confirms that he holds £5 10s to her credit, which he trusts she will relish “on account of the dear animal.” His affectionate words reveal the warmth of the leader whose resolve helped shape the course of the Second World War. Together, the letter, betting account and currency form a tangible link to Churchill’s world, preserving the warmth and enthusiasms of a figure remembered for his extraordinary place in history.
