Even from 10 Downing Street, Winston Churchill found time to keep a friend informed of her fortunes at the races. In this signed letter, the prime minister updates Odette Pol-Roger on bets he placed on her behalf on his racehorse Pol Roger. Dated April 8, 1953, the correspondence combines his enthusiasm for racing with the affectionate humor of their friendship.
Odette Pol-Roger, whose family produced Churchill’s favored Pol Roger Champagne, was a cherished friend who shared his enthusiasm for racing. Addressing her by hand as “My dear Odette,” he recounts two outings in which Pol Roger finished second. A £5 wager at Lingfield proved unsuccessful, while a subsequent each-way bet at odds of 12 to one brought a partial recovery. He delivers the balance with characteristic wit: “So at the moment you are, I am sorry to say, £1 down. I hope this will soon right itself!” Written on official prime ministerial stationery, the letter closes with a handwritten expression of affection and his initial.
