The Georgian coffee pot features an upswept spout and includes a strainer, or biggin, for holding ground coffee. It is a fine example of functional design elevated by Storr’s masterful touch.
The biggin’s elegant form is adorned with intricate details, including a striking armorial crest of the Townshend family, egg and dart edging and gadrooned accents. The Townshend family is a prestigious English aristocratic lineage, led by the Marquess Townshend. Supported by three reeded legs that end in leonine paw feet, the circular stand suspends a lamp beneath the pot, further enhancing its grandeur.
Paul Storr, one of the greatest silversmiths of the era, is renowned for his detailed craftsmanship and significant contribution to silver design. His works are characterized by their elegance and innovation, making him a favorite among royalty and nobility, including the Townshend family, whose arms are displayed on this coffee pot. Additionally, this biggin was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
