Two-Handled Tea Tray
Thomas Hannam and John Crouch
Hallmarked London, 1792

This exceptional two-handled octagonal silver tea tray, crafted by Thomas Hannam and John Crouch, is a distinguished example of Georgian silverwork. The tray features an elongated octagonal shape with a bright-cut engraved crest of the Rocke family at its center, showcasing a shield draped with cloth and topped with a bow. The border is intricately engraved with a repeating pattern of scrolling acanthus leaves interspersed with flowerhead motifs, flanked by delicately engraved bands, demonstrating the impressive craftsmanship of the makers. The tray is further distinguished by its cavetto-raised sides with a reeded rim, lending a sense of depth and refinement. The applied reeded angular handles enhance both the aesthetic and functional qualities of the tray, while the four reeded bracket feet provide a sturdy and elegant foundation.

Thomas Hannam and John Crouch were renowned for their high-quality salvers and trays, making this an exemplary example of their work. At the turn of the 18th century, their partnership was the largest producer of fine silverware, and this tray reflects their dedication to precision and design excellence. Additionally, this tray was also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
