Jimi Hendrix Handwritten Lyrics and Period Photographs
Circa 1968
Considered the most influential guitarist of the 1960s, Jimi Hendrix was described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music." His life was tragically cut short at the age of 27, making any objects owned or used by him rare treasures. These are handwritten working lyrics for the never-recorded song “Give Me Some Room to Breathe," offering an intimate record of the musician’s creative process. Crossed-out passages, revised lines and musical directions cover the page, capturing Hendrix's iconic genius.

In a professional recording career spanning barely four years, Hendrix redefined the expressive possibilities of the electric guitar. His use of feedback, extended improvisation and a fluid technique rooted in the blues expanded the instrument’s vocabulary, while his experiments with studio technology helped reshape the sound of rock music. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Hendrix’s brief career makes personal artifacts documenting his creative process especially rare. His working lyrics seldom reach the market, and another manuscript of “Give Me Some Room to Breathe” is preserved in a Hendrix lyric notebook in the collection of Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture.
