Mignon is a character from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novels Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and Wilhelm Meister’s Journeyman Years. She appears as a mysterious Italian girl whose story of abduction, wandering and exile made her an enduring Romantic symbol of longing and melancholy. Hom’s composition captures this sense of vulnerability, presenting Mignon as both delicate and hauntingly introspective.
Founded in 1763, KPM became one of Europe’s foremost porcelain manufactories under the patronage of Frederick II of Prussia. Its plaques were prized for their smooth, luminous surfaces, which allowed artists to achieve fine detail and rich color.
