Among Pierre-Auguste Renoir's most important works are his magnificent large-scale landscapes. La Seine à Port-Marly–Voiliers, painted circa 1890, is one of his largest landscapes and a monumental celebration of the Seine, whose picturesque riverbanks and boating culture inspired some of the artist's most famous masterpieces.
The towns and boating resorts along the Seine were among Renoir's most enduring sources of inspiration. Sailing and rowing had become favorite pursuits of the leisure classes, and Renoir joined fellow Impressionists Gustave Caillebotte, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley in capturing this distinctly modern world. The same culture of riverside recreation inspired Renoir's iconic Luncheon of the Boating Party, painted at nearby Chatou. In La Seine à Port-Marly–Voiliers, Renoir turns his attention almost entirely to the landscape, allowing the sailboats, water and sky to convey the pleasures of a summer afternoon along the river.
Beneath an expansive blue sky, sailboats drift across the Seine, their bright sails catching the light against a low band of trees and buildings. Renoir builds the water from feathery strokes of blue, violet, green and warm ochre, dissolving reflections into the river's surface. A small yellow boat near the center and the white sails at right punctuate the broad horizontal composition, while the artist's loose handling gives the scene an extraordinary sense of light, movement and atmosphere.
Circa 1890 marked an important turning point in Renoir's life and art. He married Aline Charigot that year, while stylistically he was moving away from the more classical manner he had explored during the 1880s under the influence of Ingres and Raphael. Travels in southern France had renewed his interest in the freshness and painterly freedom of landscape, and La Seine à Port-Marly–Voiliers reflects this return to saturated color, thin, feathery brushwork and vibrant light. These qualities, together with the softness and sensuality Renoir admired in French Rococo masters such as Boucher and Fragonard, make this monumental landscape a quintessential Renoir masterpiece. This painting was acquired directly from Renoir by Ambroise Vollard, the legendary Parisian dealer who championed the leading artists of his generation.

The work is accompanied by a certificate from Renoir scholar François Daulte, dated 19 April 1981, and will be included in the Renoir Digital Catalogue Raisonné currently being prepared by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute.
