Extraordinary rarity and noble provenance distinguish this incredible 18th-century silver ladle by the legendary Georgian silversmith Paul Storr. The ladle was almost certainly made for and used in the ducal kitchen of Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton (1740-1819), and later, His Grace Alexander Hamilton, the 10th Duke of Hamilton and Brandon.
This incredible ladle is the largest and one of only two known pieces of its kind in Storr's body of work. Created early in the artisan's career, the ladle features a sizable circular bowl with handles that terminate in beautifully patinated fruitwood. Storr had been working in his own Soho workshop for only five years when he created this exceptional ladle. At this time, the silversmith was specializing in large-scale works of the utmost refinement, displaying an uncanny mastery of his craft that attracted the attention of wealthy patrons.
Revered among history's finest silversmiths, Paul Storr (1771-1844) is credited with perfecting the works, styles and designs of the Regency period. His legacy is a remarkable body of work that spans several stylistic periods with far-reaching influences. Though primarily known for creating masterpieces of Georgian and Regency silver in a distinctive neoclassical style, Paul Storr was also quite accomplished in the earlier Rococo manner. Throughout his entire career, Storr imparted a level of craftsmanship and superior quality that has seldom been seen since.
This ladle is featured in Geometry and the Silversmith: The Domcha Collection by Christopher Hartop, pages 106-107, number 94.
