Tureen and Entree Dishes, Set of 3
Paul Storr
Hallmarked London, 1798

To receive one of Paul Storr's silver pieces was a rare honor, and even rarer were the personal gifts he crafted upon special instructions from the giver. This monumental set, consisting of a tureen and dishes, was commissioned by the inhabitants of the island of Saint Vincent as a tribute to Colonel James Seton. Colonel Seton is revered as the savior of the colony, having valiantly defended it from being overthrown.

In March 1795, the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent witnessed significant violence when a coalition of Carib people, runaway slaves and French forces revolted against the British colonists. By May, the Caribs had gained control over most of the island, but Colonel James Seton managed to secure Kingstown and ultimately defended British rule on the island.

This remarkable tureen bears an inscription that narrates Seton's heroic role:

"From the Inhabitants of the Island of St. Vincents to James Seton Junr Esqr Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the Colony Rangers. A Token of Gratitude for his having accepted the Command of them for his judicious Conduct and Gallantry in expeditiously training them and leading them to Glory."

The dishes and tureen themselves are masterpieces of craftsmanship, exemplifying why Paul Storr was the favored silversmith of royalty in his day and remains highly coveted by collectors today. The dishes feature reeded side handles adorned with acanthus detailing, and they stand on beautifully decorated lion’s paw feet. The tureen, designed in a neoclassical style, boasts an oval foot, loop handles, and a double ogee cover that adds height and grandeur to this monumental work of art. The finials are intricately designed with studded armor, a detailed crown, and a dagger, all symbols of Colonel James Seton’s bravery and military prestige
