Assayed Moscow, 1899-1908

A remarkable example of Russian silver artistry, this parcel-gilt silver trompe l’oeil cigar box by Feodor Ovchinnikov transforms an everyday object into a luxurious work of art. Masterfully crafted to resemble an actual cigar box, the piece demonstrates the extraordinary technical skill and playful ingenuity prized by Russian silversmiths at the turn of the 20th century.

The lid is adorned with Imperial Russian motifs, including the crowned double-headed eagle and imperial crown, alongside its simulated tax band, “Tsarskie” label, the 25 kopeks excise mark and 5 kopeks tax, all rendered as decorative elements that enhance the illusion of an actual cigar box.

Founded in Moscow, Feodor Ovchinnikov’s workshop was among the distinguished silver makers active during Russia’s Imperial period. Known for refined craftsmanship and technically accomplished silverwork, the firm contributed to the rich tradition of Russian decorative arts at the dawn of the 20th century.
