The glamour of Parisian nightlife comes vividly to life in Souper chez Maxim’s, an elegant oil painting by celebrated French painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue. Set within one of Paris’ most legendary restaurants, the composition unites two of the artist’s defining subjects: fashionable society and the sophisticated modern woman.
Domergue portrays an alluring woman enjoying an evening at Maxim’s in the company of a dapper gentleman. Elegantly dressed, she turns her composed gaze toward the viewer with characteristic confidence and refinement. Domergue renders the central figure with clarity and precision, while the surrounding diners and richly appointed interior dissolve into animated passages of color and expressive brushwork. His luminous palette captures the energy of the celebrated restaurant while keeping the woman firmly at the center of the scene.
Founded in 1893, Maxim’s became one of the defining social destinations of Belle Époque Paris. Its celebrated Art Nouveau interior, introduced near the turn of the century, provided an opulent setting for generations of artists, writers, performers and society figures. Through Domergue’s energetic vision, the legendary restaurant becomes more than a backdrop. It embodies the excitement, luxury and cosmopolitan spirit of Parisian high society.
Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français at just 17 years old and received the Prix de Rome in 1911 and a gold medal in 1920. Although landscapes dominated his early oeuvre, his focus shifted during the 1920s toward the subject that would define his career: la belle Parisienne. His elongated, impeccably dressed women came to embody the glamour and vitality of modern French society.
Domergue served as curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André from 1955 until his death in 1962, organizing exhibitions devoted to artists including Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Francisco Goya. He was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1950, affirming his distinguished place within 20th-century French art.
