This signed photograph captures one of the most electrifying groups in rock history: The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix stands at the center of the composition, positioned above drummer Mitch Mitchell at left and bassist Noel Redding at right. The striking black-and-white portrait was photographed in 1967 by Ian Wright, the British celebrity photographer and journalist known for his iconic images of rising music legends throughout the 1960s. That same year, the band released their groundbreaking debut album, Are You Experienced.
The photograph is signed by all three members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix signs at the upper right in gold ink, “Jimi Hendrix / EXP,” while Mitch Mitchell adds “Best wishes / Mitch” at the upper left. Noel Redding signs vertically in blue ink along the right margin, “Cheers / Noel.” Fully signed images of the original trio are especially scarce, making this a remarkable artifact from the band’s breakthrough year.
Formed in London in 1966, The Jimi Hendrix Experience changed the course of rock music almost immediately. With Hendrix’s revolutionary guitar work, Mitchell’s explosive drumming and Redding’s driving bass, the trio fused blues, psychedelia and avant-garde experimentation into a sound that felt entirely new. Their 1967 debut, Are You Experienced, remains one of the most influential first albums in rock history, introducing Hendrix’s visionary musicianship to an international audience.
