Bronze Mirror from Louis Comfort Tiffany's Comfort Lodge
Tiffany & Co.
Circa 1880

This beautiful bronze mirror was crafted by the iconic Tiffany & Co. and belonged to the personal collection of the artistic visionary Louis Comfort Tiffany. As the son of Charles L. Tiffany—Tiffany & Co.'s founder—Louis developed a discerning eye for fine goods and selected only the best objects for his many residences, including those from his father's illustrious firm. This mirror was prominently displayed in Louis' grand Miami home, known as Comfort Lodge.

The mirror embodies the height of Tiffany & Co.'s aesthetic of the late 19th century. Under the directorship of Edward C. Moore, one of the most important leaders in Tiffany & Co.'s history, the firm's coveted designs blended unique influences from across history, and this mirror showcases a stunning array of classical and Renaissance motifs. Encircled with an expertly chased lush foliate border, the mirror also centers a stoic bearded figure reminiscent of a Greek god. The integration of two functional sconces perfectly merges utility and ornament.

Louis Comfort Tiffany's Comfort Lodge was built on Miami's "Millionaire Row" in the 1920s as his winter estate. The home's special octagonal shape, disappearing walls and windows and cypress tree supports attracted much attention at the time, and local newspapers reported the home cost Tiffany an astonishing $40,000—at a time when the average home cost $4,000.

Tiffany frequented Comfort Lodge until his death in 1933, and the handlers of his estate sold the home and all of its contents to a businessman named David Scobie in 1935. Mr. Scobie gifted some of Tiffany's belongings left in the house—including this mirror—to his business associate and his family, the Martins, who kept these items in their family collection in Florida for decades. This mirror stands as both a testament to Tiffany & Co.'s magnificent craftsmanship and to the unparalleled vision of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
