This exceptional collection of six napkin rings was crafted from the timbers of some of the most storied vessels in British maritime history: H.M.S. Victory, H.M.S. Ganges, H.M.S. Iron Duke, H.M.S. Valiant, H.M.S. Warspite and R.M.S. Mauretania. Each turned wooden napkin ring is applied with a brass plaque identifying the ship from which its timber was taken, creating a rare assembled group of naval and ocean liner relics.
Every napkin ring in this collection tells a crucial part of British maritime history. One of the rings is made from H.M.S. Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and the world’s oldest naval ship still in commission. Its brass plaque identifies the timber as coming from the ship’s bowsprit, purchased on June 2, 1937. Another ring is made from H.M.S. Ganges, an 84-gun ship of the line built at Bombay in 1821 and later remembered as the last sailing ship to serve as a seagoing flagship.
Three of the napkin rings are connected to the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War I. H.M.S. Iron Duke served as Admiral Jellicoe’s flagship during the battle, while H.M.S. Valiant and H.M.S. Warspite were among the celebrated Queen Elizabeth-class battleships that helped define British naval power in the early 20th century. Warspite went on to achieve further distinction in World War II, earning more battle honors than any other individual ship in the Royal Navy.
Completing the collection is a napkin ring made from the decking of R.M.S. Mauretania, the legendary Cunard ocean liner known as the “Old Lady of the Atlantic.” Launched in the early 20th century, Mauretania was once the largest ship in the world and held transatlantic speed records for decades. Together, these six relics preserve physical links to Trafalgar, Jutland, the age of sail, the great ocean liners and Britain’s long maritime legacy. The set is complete with its wooden base.
