The Pedestal

The first recorded use of the pedestal was as a decorative support for columns found in Roman temples in provinces such as Asia Minor and Syria. It was a very different story in Rome, however, where pedestals were solely used to elevate and emphasize the importance of figural representations of their gods and goddesses.
